From the Chiefs

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about our program! The UCSD Family Medicine Residency Program is comprised of a tight-knit community of residents who are compassionate, motivated, enthusiastic individuals, striving to become leaders in Family Medicine. Our residents come for all over the nation and the world, recently from as far as Australia and Mexico, showing our commitment to recruiting the best and the brightest applicants. We hope you will consider being a part of our phenomenal community!

Our program offers an ideal balance of academic and community medicine. During your PGY-1 year, you will rotate with residents from different specialties including Internal Medicine, OB-GYN, and Pediatrics. This allows you to learn from expert faculty and build strong working and personal relationships with other residents. On other core rotations, you will work one-on-one with community physicians and experience a variety of health systems. Not only will you develop a panel of continuity patients at your own clinic, you will spend time in free clinics including San Diego’s renowned St. Vincent de Paul Village, which serves the local homeless and uninsured population. Our close proximity to the Tijuana-San Diego International Border, just 18 miles to the south, also provides us with volunteering opportunities in low income communities such as Tijuana, Rosarito, and Ensenada. We are also excited to offer areas of concentration in Sports Medicine, Advanced Procedures, Integrative Medicine, and more recently Women’s Health for residents wanting extra training in these fields.

While UCSD offers an extraordinary training experience, the weather and activities in San Diego are also unparalleled. Outdoor activities including beach volleyball, surfing, rock climbing, hiking, running, soccer, golf, and paddle boarding can be enjoyed all year round. We encourage you to explore the many hotspots of our great city including Coronado Island, Del Mar, La Jolla, the World Famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego. There is always something to do on your day off!

Our residents love training at UCSD. It is a one-of-a-kind program that encourages its residents to pursue their own individual interests and career goals. During your three years here, you will be challenged, supported and inspired. You will experience the full breadth of Family Medicine and develop life long connections within the San Diego community. We hope you will choose UCSD to help you become the best Family Physician you can be.
