Family Medicine Residency Program

Letter from the Director

Family Medicine is a discipline where medical decision-making is approached from a community to family to patient perspective. We understand that individual organs, while each important, serve a necessary function for the survival of the whole. We seek out and appreciate the context of health and illness and strive to understand the impact of relationships, family, work conditions and living conditions on individuals. Rather than simplify the care of patients, Family Physicians participate in the care of all people, appreciate the beauty of the entire life cycle, and embrace the complexity that medicine offers. Finally, Family Medicine is a discipline woven into the fabric of the community. We do not hide behind castle walls and try to exert our good intentions on the surrounding populace. Instead, we are out in the community, working with its people, as educators, providers of health care and creators of opportunity. I am pleased you choose to visit our website, and hope that you share the same enthusiasm that my colleagues and I have for the discipline of Family Medicine!

Thank you for your interest in our program. Choosing a program is never an easy task, however I would like to offer you some reasons to consider training with us at UCSD!

  1. Training in an Academic Health Center-sometimes the best way to learn medicine is from the Specialists conducting the research and the Family Physicians who integrate the knowledge in practical clinical application
  2. Excellent Evidence Based Medicine Curriculum-to develop the skills necessary to care for the patient population in your community
  3. Comprehensive Continuity Experience-The Family Practice Center is the heart and soul of any residency. Residents learn to comprehensively care for patients in continuity under the supervision of a diverse faculty
  4. Community Based Experiences-Highlights include a 3-year, longitudinal, clinical rotation at St. Vincent DePaul Village for the Homeless, OB Clinics in the La Maestra Community Clinic, and work at the UCSD Student Run Free Clinic Projects throughout San Diego county.
  5. Opportunities for Research and Academic Enrichment-The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is ranked among the highest in the nation for NIH grant funding amongst other Family Medicine Departments. Our faculty are pioneers and leaders in the fields of Health Outcomes, Quality of Life Analysis, Epidemiology, Women’s Health Issues and Health Care Delivery Systems Analysis.

Our program’s mission statement highlights all of these qualities. After completion of your training in our program, you will be prepared to practice quality and comprehensive medicine, develop skills to continue self-learning and assessment, develop leadership skills to more positively interact with your community and join the large number of successful Family Physicians who have graduated from this program over the last 25 years.

Did I mention the beautiful city and weather?

Once again, thank you for your interest in our program and enjoy your visit to our website.

With Warmest Regards,

Tyson Ikeda, M.D.
